Here are 17 of the best insect and bug activities for preschoolers

Yoga Bug

Start your day off with some bug themed gross motor by using the book, Yoga Bug

Your toddler or preschooler will have a blast pretending to be different bugs, all while practicing various yoga poses

Alphabet Caterpillar

Work on letter recognition with your preschooler by using this alphabet caterpillar printable.

This free printable comes with two different activities:

  1. Matching lowercase to uppercase
  2. Placing the letters in alphabetically order

These printables work well as file folder games or as an addition to a preschool learning binder.

Insect Sensory Bin

Sensory play helps develop so many skills for young children.

This insect sensory bin helps preschoolers learn how to identify different bugs, work on counting, build fine motor skills, and more. Plus, it’s fairly easy to make.

Get all the details on this bug sensory bin here.

Butterfly Life Cycle Sequence and Matching

This free printable butterfly life cycle sequence activity is a great way to introduce the concept of order to preschoolers, as well as learn the different stages of the monarch’s life cycle

This printable works great as a file folder game or as an addition to a preschool learning binder.

We also like to use our Safari Ltd. butterfly life cycle set to do some object to image matching.

Butterfly Life Cycle Layered Puzzle

This butterfly life cycle layered puzzle is another great hands-on way to teach or reiterate the amazing metamorphosis that these beautiful insects go through.

I will say that this puzzle can be a bit tricky for youngsters if all the pieces get mixed together though. What’s worked well for us is to separate all the different layers into separate piles. As my preschooler goes through the order of the life cycle, I will slide her each corresponding set of puzzle pieces to complete.

Butterfly Symmetry

This butterfly symmetry is a free printable from Little Spark Company that features 12 different species of butterflies, using beautiful vintage images.

This is a wonderful puzzle set to introduce symmetry and aid in visual discrimination for young children.

Butterfly Anatomy and Letter Tracing

Along with the butterfly life cycle, you could also dive in to their anatomy a bit as well. We’ve really been enjoying this watercolor poster from Green Urban Creative.

This poster also comes with a beautiful handwriting kit, using an assortment of print and cursive handwriting practice pages, covering “B” for butterfly

Pictured above are just 2 of the pages from this set.

Raising Butterflies and Ladybugs

I don’t know how you could go through a bug unit study without raising butterflies or ladybugs. I mean, this is a homeschool tradition.

This year we ordered painted lady caterpillars from Insect Lore, and all 5 of them emerged into beautiful butterflies.

My preschooler and I throughly enjoyed taking care of these creatures, observing their metamorphosis, and then releasing them into the wild.

My preschooler enjoyed it so much, she asked me to learn about ladybugs next. I followed through with her interest, and our ladybug larvae from Insect Lore have just arrived!

Insect Rubbing Plates

A super simple, but fun art project for preschoolers is to use insect rubbing plates to “draw” various bugs.

You may have to help them hold the paper in place while they’re coloring, but this is a very low-prep craft on your part.

We went with this set of 16 insects, that includes butterflies, beetles, a ladybug, an ant, and more.

Ladybug Life Cycle

The life cycle of the ladybug is another interesting topic you can cover in your bug unit.

This free printable is from 123Homeschool4Me and is the perfect compliment to the Insect Lore (or Safari Ltd.) ladybug life cycle set, as well as if you’re raising ladybugs in your ladybug land habitat.

Ladybug Scissor Skills

Another free printable for you that helps develop those fine motor skills through cutting practice.

Grab some blunt safety scissors for your preschooler and download these scissor strips over at Living Montessori Now

Bugs Floor Puzzle

This 24 piece Bugs floor puzzle by Melissa & Doug is a great way to sneak in some logic, fine motor, and bug identification. Consider completing it as a family to get some quality bonding time in.

Insect First Letter Sounds Clip Cards

If you’re looking to work on some phonics with your preschooler, these insect themed first letter sound clip cards may be right up your alley.

This free printable pack comes with 8 different insects for your child to recognize and practice clipping the first letter in each name.

As your child is clipping on the clothespins, they are also strengthening those little hands for writing

Bug Jar Counting

Count hands-on with this bug collecting jar.

You can print this one off for free over at The Measured Mom, and you can either use the printable bugs that come with or you can do like we did, and just use some toy insects instead.

Have your child roll a die or pick out a wooden number (we got ours at the Dollar Tree) and place that number of bugs in their collecting jar. Offer some tongs or tweezers to add in a fine motor component

Snug as a Bug in a Rug

Snug as a Bug in a Rug is a cooperative game where instead of competition, you work together to get all the bugs under the rug before all three of the stink bugs are released.

It’s really a fun way to work on counting, colors, and shapes, and either everybody loses or everybody wins

Bugs Dot Marker Sheets

My kids LOVE when they get to use their Dot markers, and these bug sheets from Totschooling.net were no exception.

These free dot marker sheets are a great way to work on hand-eye coordination, letter recognition, letter sounds, and pre-writing skills. There’s really lots of different ways you can use them.

Bug Peg Dolls

Okay, so these little peg dolls are just too much fun, and the kids really enjoy playing with them.

I created these for the kids to inspire imagination, as well as see what they’ve learned come out in their play

Plus, making these DIY peg dolls together has just been such a great bonding opportunity for my daughter and I, and I really look forward to making more handicrafts together as she grows.

A Preschool Bug Theme

I hope this post gave you lots of “bug-spiration” for planning a bug theme for your preschool.

There’s a ton of different bug-themed activities out there, from counting insects to raising butterflies to painting peg dolls together. Pick a few out for your preschooler and just get “buggy” with it!
