How to Set Up the Butterfly Life Cycle Sequence Activity

There’s a few different ways you can set up your butterfly life cycle sequence activity.

 1. Print, cut, and go: Simply print the activity, cut out the image cards of the eggs, caterpillar, chrysalis, and butterfly, and you’re good to good. Laminate if you wish.

2. Make into a file folder game: This is one of my favorite ways to set up these sort of activities. Grab a file folder and some clear Velcro dots and then laminate and cut out your printable. Add a clear Velcro dot onto each number slot. You’ll then take the other side of your Velcro fastener and place it on that dot, sticky side up. Then, you can place the appropriate butterfly stage card on the fastener. Let it site for a minute before picking it up. Now, you should be good to go! I also prefer to put an envelope or more Velcro dots on the other side of the folder to hold the pieces when not in use. That way the student can just pull and place.

You can even turn this into an object to image matching activity using the Safari Ltd. Monarch Life Cycle Set.

3. Place into a learning/morning binder: This activity also makes an excellent addition to a preschool (or kindergarten) learning binder. Now, for binders, you can laminate both sheets of the activity if you wish, however, I’ve had the best luck with placing the first sheet into a protective sleeve and then laminating the pieces that will be placed on top. Adhere Velcro dots the same way as described in the file folder section.

How to Use the Printable

This is a pretty straight-forward activity to do with young children.

As your child places the butterfly life cycle in the sequential order, here are a few talking points you can utilize:

  1. “What kind of animal do you think hatches out of those eggs?”
  2. “A butterfly life cycle has 4 different stages, and each one of those stages has a different goal.”
  3. “What does a caterpillar transform into after they’ve grown, and grown, and grown?”
  4. “What has a caterpillar transformed into after they emerge from the chrysalis?”
  5. “Do you know what type of butterfly this is?”
  6. “This type of transformation is called a complete metamorphosis.”
